How we use your giving at St Barnabas

We are fortunate to be custodians of not one but two historic churches – St Barnabas in the centre of Linslade, built in 1848 to serve New Linslade, and St Marys Old Linslade, across the fields, dating back to around 1100. Both churches in their turn were supported by populations much smaller than today.
Now we seek to maintain St Barnabas as a house of prayer but also a centre of community life in modern Linslade, as well as keeping St Mary’s in good order and regular use. To do so costs around £140,000 each year, with the main spending going on
  • Maintaining the buildings we have inherited – the roofs, windows, the bells, and the organ, along with heating and cleaning commitments - and hope to pass on in good order. There are regular outside visitations and inspections to keep us up the mark.
  • Having our own vicar – something growing numbers of churches cannot afford to do.
  • Outreach in Linslade and the wider area – the weekly newsletter, the monthly parish magazine, the many local groups who use our rebuilt Church Hall.
  • Improvements to keep our work relevant to the present day. An example would be the current introduction of cameras in the church to stream our services to a congregation who cannot all attend Church in person, through health or distance.
  • Utility bills, of the sort we all face – electricity, gas, insurances, licences.
We all live busy lives. As the Battle of Edgehill prayer says, “O Lord, Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I should forget Thee, do not Thou forget me”.  It would be easy to lose sight of the sacrifice and commitment of those who built and worshipped in our two lovely churches.
St Barnabas and St Mary’s are a baton passed to us to run a leg in the race of life. You can help us with even a small donation, or if you wish to, a more regular Giving commitment. You can simply use one of the Giving buttons here – or, if you prefer, contact us as the Parish Office, St Barnabas Church, Waterloo Road, Linslade, Leighton Buzzard LU7 2NR, or email us at parish@stbarnabaslinslade.uk to discuss how you can support us. You will have our appreciation.
