Dear All,
This Sunday is an All-Age Eucharist, so on this website is the Order of Service we will use at our 10 am service, which will be the usual simpler All-Age service, with a couple of Easter additions, mostly extra 'Alleluias'. You probably know that 'alleluia' is the Greek version of the Hebrew 'hallelujah', which means 'praise God'. For Christians it is especially associated with Easter, when we remember Jesus' triumph over sin and death, and praise God for His mighty acts revealed through Jesus. Conversely, we tend not to use the word during the preceding season of Lent, when our focus is less on God's triumph, and more on our own sin and need to repent. But Easter is a season of praise and celebration when we give thanks for all that God has done for us. Before then, this evening, the Festival Singers have a concert in St Barnabas, the main focus of which will be a performance of Faure's Requiem. Next week on Friday, the Heath Band has a concert in Church. Both concerts begin at 7:30 pm, and tickets can be bought on-line or at the door. This week, there will be a Julian Meeting at 4 pm on Wednesday in the Lady Chapel for silent prayer. Next week, on Sunday the 28th, we will have our Annual Parochial Church Meetings in the Hall after the 10 am service. As usual, there will be two meetings. The first will be for the election of two churchwardens for the coming year, and will probably start at about 11:15 am. The second will follow on immediately, and will include election of PCC members and consideration of the Church accounts. I sent the report booklet out a few weeks ago by email, and there are some paper copies at the back of the church. If anyone has lost their copy, and would like me to email them another, please let me know. I must also advertise the Confirmation Service on the 19th of May. Bishop Alan, bishop of St Albans, is coming to our main Sunday service on the 19th of May, which is the Feast of Pentecost. As the third Sunday of May, this would normally be an All-Age service, so we do intend to keep as many elements of the All-age service as we can, while adding to them the necessary additions for the confirmation of candidates. It should be a fun occasion, so please do note it now. This will be the first confirmation we have had at St Barnabas in my time here as Vicar, and there won't be another in St Barnabas for many years, in all likelihood, as the confirmations move around the churches of the Team. If you have not been confirmed (made for yourself the promises made for you when you were baptised) and are interested in being so, do speak to me about it. Before then, on the 5th of May, evensong on Sunday will be at 4:30 pm up at St Mary's. Please let me know if you fancy a walk to the Church beforehand to celebrate Rogationtide. Advance warning too about Ascension Day on the 9th of May. There will be a Sung Eucharist at St Barnabas at 7:30 pm. That's probably enough for now. God bless, and see you soon Fr Bernard The Rev'd Dr B Minton Team Vicar of Linslade Ouzel Valley Team |
